Letter to Jean Crespelle, 1968 Dec. 2.

Edouard Goerg writes to art critic Jean-Paul Crespelle after receiving his new book [La folle époque]. The artist is pleased with the place given him in the chapter about the Salon d'automne. Disappointed by a biographical error presenting his mother as Alsatian, he writes a 1 1/2 page portrait of his very Irish mother and her influence on his education. Referring to Crespelle's chapter about the Salon d'automne, Goerg writes that, in comparison to the richness of the "années folles" of his generation, the Blaue Reiter, the Bauhaus, and "tous les petits mouvements allemands ne sont rien." However, he says, the German works were better received in their country, while the French bourgeoisie permitted the works of Gauguin, Van Gogh, the Fauves, Matisse and Soutine to be sold abroad, mostly in America, through the efforts of dealer Paul Guillaume and collector Albert Barnes.
